(GN): Simon Cowell, America’s Got Talent judge has decided to donate £25,000 (roughly $32,640) to Humane Society International (HSI), a charity organization that deals with animal issues worldwide.
HSI tweeted about the news and confirmed his donation. They said that the money that Cowell donated will likely save over 200 dogs and puppies from a cruel South Korean dog farm that breeds dogs and slaughters them for human consumption. Their plan is to go there, pick all the dog and then send them for recovery and adoption to different countries like Canada, the United States, the UK, the Netherlands, etc.
They didn’t stop with just the tweet. They published a photo of a mother dog and her puppies trapped on one of those horrible cages. HSI wanted to show the world how these dogs live. According to them, the animals spend their entire lives in metal cages before they are violently taken and brought out for slaughter. The killing is usually done by electrocution or hanging.
Even though dog meat consumption is on the decline in South Korea, HSI confirmed that there are thousands of other dog farms that still exist. According to their research, that is approximately 2.5 million dogs a year that are bred for human consumption. Up until now, they’ve managed to close 12 dog meat farms and save nearly 1,400 dogs. That is not even a third, but still, it is something.
Additionally, it is important to mention that closing these farms doesn’t mean only saving animals. In most cases, the charity helps dog meat farmers leave the industry and start a more humane business, like mushroom farming.
Their ultimate goal is to get the Korean government to listen to them and follow their lead by adopting similar strategies about ending the dog meat industry once and for all.
Simon Cowell, a proud pet owner and animal lover himself, has been supporting their cause for a long time. In 2017, he spoke during their #EndDogMeat campaign and said that eating a dog would be exactly the same as eating your dog. “It’s the fact you’re eating such a kind, helpless, sweet animal,” he said. So, it was just a matter of time until he decided to donate his money for these helpless creatures.
