Film Ahoot – Short film in collaboration with Aahung, directed and produced by the talented Angeline Malik will be showcased on digital platforms with a storyline that revolves around family planning and contraception.
A large number of the people in our society unfortunately have little to no real understanding, even in the year 2020, of the concept of the 2 aforementioned terms and hence end up with up to 14 children in a household.
When confronted about the shockingly large number of children and how any of them will ever be able to get the right amount of attention, love, care, education and sometimes even basic necessities like food and clothes, the extremists in the household – the husband and his immediate as well as extended kin, almost always reply with statements such as “children are blessings and bring provision with them”, “the more the kids, the better”, “why would someone use contraceptives and stop this blessing sent from Above” which have clearly been twisted as per their requirements.
While those statements are all true in their own ways, these people fail to acknowledge that the wife involved in the whole process has a right to have a say in the matter of “how many kids”, how she is simply not a child-producing machine and the fact that it is very important to consider her health and ability to be able to take care of so many children and cater to each child’s individual needs as well as manage the household when taking such a huge decision.
Addressing all those shall-not-be-named stereotypes including how much society pressurises newly wed couples to start reproducing right from the night of their marriage and not even have the opportunity to spend quality time with each other and explore life together, the satirical film starts off by showing a newly married couple, with many dreams to fulfill and milestones yet to achieve, on their wedding night.
However, the supposed-to-be romantic night unfortunately turns into a nightmare when the newly-wed wife who herself is a family-planning doctor and a hardcore encourager of contraceptives in marriage, played by the dazzling and multi-skilled Hajra Yamin, discovers she has gotten married into a family with already eight siblings and more on the way.
